Raphaël DELORME (1885-1962)
Young Woman in her Interior Oil on panel signed lower right 36 x 32 cm (Repeints) Raphaël Delorme belongs to the Bordeaux school of the inter-war period which gathered around Jean Dupas. At the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1925, this group of artists presented a hybrid style drawing both on the purity of Ingres and on the freedom of colour inspired by Fauvism and Diaghilev's Russian ballets. He trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in his home town before becoming a theatre decorator in Paris. Urged on by his family, he then devoted himself to easel painting. The latter will always bear witness to his sense of theatrical decoration. The lascivious pose of the young woman and the wall decoration behind her attest to this.
