Paul Fischer (1860-1934)
Snowy street Oil on panel signed lower right Stamped on the back "Paul Fischer's dod produktion - April 1934" and numbered 151 25 x 32,5 cm Paul Fischer, the chronicler of modern Danish life Son of the artist Phillip Fischer, he started at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen in 1876. His training was shortened, but this did not prevent him from making a name for himself when, in 1882, he sold a drawing to Ude og hjemme. The editor of this magazine, F. Hendriksen, brought him into contact with all the contemporary artistic trends of Parisian life, especially impressionism. This led to several stays in Paris which were to prove very influential in his later work. Thus, following the example of Gustave Caillebotte or Jean Béraud, he decided to show the urban landscape at the dawn of the 20th century, which was then in full transformation. His street scenes show a concern for detail, not without a link to the photography he loved and used in his art. However, this precision does not alter the strong sense of immediacy and transience that emanates from his paintings. Thus, the men on the left are busy clearing the snow from the street while the two men on the right seem to be moving towards us. The painting presented here illustrates the painter's attachment to winter landscapes, a pronounced taste for grey tones and snowy streets. It is a theme that he will be fond of throughout his career. This major artist of 19th century Danish painting will be honored at the reopening of the Copenhagen Museum in 2020, with an exhibition recalling his multiple talents and his love for the city.
