Wooden grave keeper (zhenmu shou), polychromatically decorated with red scrolls on a black background, eyes wide open, tongue protruding and scrolls carved on the forehead, adorned with large antlers. (Gerces and missing parts) H. 76 cm This type of object was discovered in the tombs of the Chu kingdom, in connection with shamanic rituals. These creatures with large eyes, dangling tongues and large antlers are thought to have a protective function and were placed in the tombs probably to protect the dead from demons or to escort their souls to the afterlife.
