SAM SZAFRAN (1934-2019)
Untitled, 1987 Watercolour on paper, signed lower middle 72 x 47 cm Provenance: Galerie Claude Bernard, Paris Szafran's watercolour paintings of vegetation are even more numerous than his blues. The fascinating character of this technique was first revealed to the artist when he undertook to enhance his first lithographs with watercolour, like Degas in his monotypes, which were printed in 1976 in the studio of Piero Crommelynck. It was not long before watercolour seemed to him to be particularly suited to representing plants in large format. "My obsession with plants has found its best ground for expression for the past fifteen years. These large watercolours are the negative of the positive of the blue leaf pastels of the 1970s. They are the result of chain reactions that provoke continuous deviations. Szafran once again shows himself to be a tireless experimenter and unparalleled discoverer. In a very scientific way, he subjects watercolours to systematic tests until he achieves the desired effect. He uses it almost dry or always mixed with a few drops of ox gall. The result is iridescence that varies according to the proportions. A Chinese friend who saw him at work told him that he had unknowingly reinvented the old Chinese watercolour painting. Julia Drost
