PROUST, Marcel (1871-1922), écrivain français. - Lot 97
PROUST, Marcel (1871-1922), écrivain français. L.A.S. "Marcel" to Louis d'Albufera. [1904]. 2 pp. in-8 oblong. Mourning paper. Small folds. Marcel Proust intervened on behalf of Louisa de Mornand to obtain a role in a play."Here is the letter. Have someone carry it for you. I think a direct approach would have been a hundred times better at Bataille [playwright Henry Bataille]. For it seems too false and too much of a stretch to say "out of discretion, she doesn't want to tell you, but I'm telling you". I know so little about Bataille that he thinks I'm just a simple envoy. And frank indiscretion (and besides there was no indiscretion) is much better than indiscretion that takes on the airs of discretion, airs that will deceive Bataille less than anyone else. But finally, here is the letter and you can send it perfectly. My little liaison with Bataille hardly allows me to do it better [...]. Marcel". Thanks to Proust's intervention, Louisa de Mornand will get a role in Henry Bataille's play, Maman Colibri (Théâtre du Vaudeville, first performance November 8, 1904). Louisa de Mornand (1884-1963), an actress in theatre and then in cinema, had a relationship with Louis d'Albufera, a great friend of Marcel Proust, in 1903.
