PIAF, Edith (1915-1963), chanteuse et parolière française. - Lot 90
PIAF, Edith (1915-1963), chanteuse et parolière française. L.A.S. "Pupuce", to Yves Montand. [Switzerland], March 2, 1946. 4 pp. in-4 on checkered paper. Very beautiful and long letter from Edith Piaf then on tour in Switzerland for several weeks. "My beloved. To say that it's been a long fortnight since we saw each other, do you think it's long, I think I could be in Paris sooner than I thought, so much the better, I'm fed up with this country and I'm especially fed up with not seeing you. [...] How are you my sweetheart? I'm still a little tired but I'm still a little better than before. Hopefully I'll come back fully recovered. I heard that in an article you said that I'm the woman of your life... Is that true? But then you love me? How nice! Yesterday I had lunch at the French consul's, on the sly, he is charming, don't worry, there was his wife who is also charming, and some high personalities, such as a professor in philosophy, and a great banker, and my faith some very nice people, all French "obviously". Yesterday I had to sing fifteen songs, an hour and a quarter on stage, you bet if they like it, I'm very proud of the rest, isn't it my country that I represent? I'm very proud of the rest of it, isn't that my country that I represent? And seeing that I'm doing a bit of good for La France in my own little sphere, I'm very moved by it, the consul himself was quite surprised to see the night of the premiere people going round the room to pass in front of me and thank me for their evening, it seems he hadn't seen that "the consul". Also, I'm very proud and I like to tell you that every day before going out I have two hours to wash myself, not a single thread, not a single hair sticking out, when I think that people compliment me on my toilet, it's been a long time since that happened to me. I'm glad I stopped drinking, when I think of the silly reputation I've earned from my so-called friends [...]. My little big one, I think in a couple of days you're going to be settled in your new apartment....
