Long conversation, mainly during the Occupation, on the genesis of the Amitiés particulières and Peyrefitte's literary vocation, in which Montherlant is very often mentioned. Vigneau published Roger Peyrefitte's first five novels, including Les Amitiés particulières (1943), which had considerable repercussions, crowned by the Prix Renaudot, the true birth certificate of his literary vocation. We can only quote a few excerpts from this fascinating correspondence, which begins in October 1940, when Peyrefitte resides with his parents at the Château d'Alet (Aude); it was Montherlant who recommended Peyrefitte to Jean Vigneau. Peyrefitte comes back on the case of his forced resignation from diplomacy, speaking of "extorted signature". In a long letter he explains at length the facts, explaining that he was in Vichy "the victim of an infamous police ambush"; following a "real moral torture", he was forced to sign a deposition, then to choose between revocation and resignation, without being able to explain himself; he would like to be able to return to "la Carrière". 3 December: "As I told you, my forced hobbies are at least laborious: I write, I write, it's a joy. Sometimes I feel a certain bitterness when I tell myself that, I'm sure I'm only writing for myself, but that's always it! [...]».
