PÉGUY, Charles (1873-1914), écrivain, poète et essayiste fra - Lot 85
PÉGUY, Charles (1873-1914), écrivain, poète et essayiste français. L.A.S. "Charles" to his wife Charlotte. [Nonsard], August 17, 1914. 2 pp. in-12. Fragility in the central fold with small clean tears. Moving letter from Charles Péguy to his wife, a few days before he was killed on the front. "[...] When you write to me, do you want to put in your letter one or two white envelopes for me to answer you. In the countryside it's the envelopes that are most lacking. I see Monsieur Perier every day. He is a very good officer. It's been raining since this morning. He is in very good health. We eat a lot and well. I kiss and love you. Your Charles". Lieutenant in reserve, Charles Péguy is leaving for the campaign as soon as he is mobilized. He died in action at the beginning of the Battle of Marne, killed by a bullet in the forehead, on September 5, 1914 at Villeroy, near Neufmontiers-lès-Meaux, while he was urging his company not to give up an inch of French land to the enemy.
