MUSSET, Alfred de (1810-1957), poète et dramaturge français. Piecemeal M.A. S.l.n.d. 4 pp. small in-4 on 2 sheets numbered "3" and "4". Blue ink. Une fousseur A gallant dialogue between two characters, a baroness and a man named Moreuil, probably as part of a play project. The text seems unpublished. "Do you know what the love of a woman is? Do you know what duties it imposes? Moreuil: Yes madam. The Baroness: you are very learned.Moreuil: No, but I believe that a handsome and gallant man encouraging his faith does a holy thing and that his destiny to the happiness of duty forever in chains no longer fears anything in the world? The Baroness: It is very nicely said and I am too happy; but you may find me fussy, I think that these words so full of dignity, there is an ornament missing... Moreuil: Which one? The Baroness: The truth. Here, I, without detours, without vain periphery, I want to annihilate the daily weave whose premeditated thread I think I glimpse. You are violently irritated against me. Moreuil: How? The Baroness: My God! Sir, I would have bad grace to deny the conversation I had on the terrace with Madame Joris, which you recall. I am the criminal, and, if you wish, I have broken your hymen; but may your justice absolve me in safety... I've done everything without malice. Could I suppose that Madame Joris was so difficult to make good husbands, and that a simple little innocent chatter must have swallowed up the hope of a brilliant marriage? Here we were talking about balls, backstage at the opera, rags, fashions, caprice, love... et cetera. I have portrayed you as a fashionable man loving fine morals and convenient virtue [...].Moreuil: I implore your handThe Baroness: and you already know that you pray in vain. This hand is promised and in a month, I think, I will be, God willing, Countess of Glarence [...]".
