MONTESQUIOU, Robert de (1855-1921), homme de lettres, poète et dandy, ami de Proust. 2 L.A.S., one to Marie Scalini (2 pp. ½ in-8, Sept. 20, 1919, envelope), the other to Paul Brach (2 pp. in-12, Nov. 23, 1917, fixed on the envelope). - to the singer Marie Scalini (1852-1931). Concerning the classification of some of their works of art in order to be recognized as being of national interest. It discourages her from taking the steps. "Believe me, let us avoid the humiliating steps that would add to our pain, that of being told that the little we possess does not fall into the designated category [...]. As for me, for my part, I am quite determined to spare myself this additional debacle, which I would obviously not do, if I owned the portrait of Madame de Pompadour by Boucher, like Maurice Rothschild. As far as I am concerned, I am sending Henry to take a few items from the first two classes that I have designated, and for the rest, I shall await God's judgment, as in Lohengrin [...]". - to Paul Brach, he accepts his invitation "without ceremony and without formal dress". He adds: "For the portrait, I found myself in the presence of so many acceptances of myself that I no longer knew which one to point to. You will choose".
