Exceptional and moving draft of a letter from Yves Montand after his break-up with Edith Piaf. "My pupuce! I will always begin my letters when I write to you with "ma pupuce". You will always remain my pupuce, my Eydith! who gave me everything, who taught me so much! I'll never feel like I'm writing to a woman or a friend, you'll always be more than that to me. Whatever you do or become, you are a symbol of tenacity, courage, self-sacrifice, even if at times you act or think differently. I have drawn these three qualities from you and you have taught me others, goodness! and forgiveness! That's why, even if I become a very big boy, I will always feel like a child, always like your child in front of you! Don't ever forget that, pupil! It's got nothing to do with love. You see, I've just learned today that when I got back to Paris, you still wanted to take care of my premiere [Yves Montand was to star in the ABC in early 1947] and reach a large number of people! Did he cry? Yes, pup pup, I cried - because I've got crazy stage fright, a stage fright that makes me squeeze my throat at times.
