JONGKIND, Johan-Barthold (1819-1891), peintre, aquarelliste - Lot 60
JONGKIND, Johan-Barthold (1819-1891), peintre, aquarelliste et graveur néerlandais, un des précurseurs de l'impressionnisme.
L.A.S., to his merchant Martin. Rotterdam, October 24, 1858. 3 pp. in-8, address and postmarks. Elegant modern navy blue half morocco undershirt, with the painter's name in gold, paper plates depicting long grain morocco with title label. Some flaws.
"My good Martin! According to your letter of 14 October, I still owe me one hundred francs on my last painting, please send them to me by return of post. You will oblige me a lot because I had a lot to pay. As I told you, I had hoped to be able to send you a painting today, but so far I have not been able to finish it after my ideas. But when it is done I will be happy to send you this painting. For the past few days, I've been feeling less well. For sure this has had an influence on my painting and on my mind so that I am not always cheerful and in a good mood either. In the meantime I recommend myself to you and close to you in the good memory of all my good friends [...]". Jongkind corresponded a lot with Martin, his merchant and confidant. At that time he was going through a difficult period: he had left Paris to live in Holland, where he led a solitary existence until 1860. Martin, who bought almost all his productions from him and sincerely wanted to help him, thus remained his only link with France.
