GIDE, André (1869-1951), écrivain français.
L.A.S., to a "dear sir." May 8, 1935. 1 p. ½ in-8. Small tear to a fold. Letter relating to the speech Gide made during the debate on the Union for Truth in which he expressed his positions regarding the USSR. "[...] I am very grateful for your communication. But what regrets it brings me: that the article on the Visconti Street meeting was written from a text as deplorably, as monstrously wrong as the one given by the magazine Reportages - which makes me say sometimes, often (and not only to myself) exactly the opposite of what was said. Example: "I am nothing less than a theorist" becomes: "I am nothing more than a theorist". Etc., etc. A correct text of this session will be published very soon, edited both by the Union for Truth circle and by La Nouvelle Revue Française, a text carefully reviewed by each of the interlocutors [...]". André Gide was invited to L'Union pour la Vérité (also called the Union for Moral Action) on January 23, 1935, to explain his position vis-à-vis the USSR. The discussions were published by the Nouvelle Revue Française under the title André Gide et notre temps. The following year, Gide published Retour de l'U.R.S.S., an account of his journey and a disillusionment.
