DORÉ, Gustave (1832-1883), peintre, graveur et illustrateur français.
L.A.S. to editor Paul Dalloz. November 30, 1874. 4 pp. in-8. Envelope preserved. Nice letter from Gustave Doré in which he implored his friend to stop his efforts in his favour concerning his elevation to the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honour. "[...] I have come to claim the same friendship from you, begging you even to stop completely and absolutely; which, I have no doubt, will cost you more than anything else. ...] I can no longer and will no longer admit that an insistent request has been made, where there is no rank to be granted to me but an insulting oversight to be repaired. ...] To hear you say that at this moment we cannot have one of these things, which in three weeks time will be widely distributed, what you will witness, like me, is to hear you say in good French that you are a man... gullible and gullible. I find that wretched and impertinent. I will therefore suffer to see your dignity, like mine, become more involved: I'm telling you sincerely, I made a mistake, a big mistake in letting you do this, and I don't want you to say another word, you hear me, I don't want you to say another word [...]. I have self-respect, will you tell me? Yes, but it is my best possession, in the midst of the hard trials of my life, and I intend to keep it intact. [...]». Gustave Doré was finally made an Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1879.
