CHAISSAC, Gaston (1910-1964), peintre français.
L.A.S. to Mr. Jules Lefranc. Boulogne par les Essarts, Vendée, [August 8, 1945, according to a postal mark]. 3 pp. in-4. Double sheet of checked school notebook, address on the back with postmarks and stamps. Very nice letter from Chaissac, recalling his talents as a colorist. "I also colour in drawings made by others and so far I have coloured in drawings by my wife and several others, including my children. And I am happy with the result. It may be that people would like to have drawings of them colored by me and in this field I am looking to build up a clientele. I would be curious to color a drawing by you to see the result it would give and I would be particularly delighted if you send me one so that I can color it. Of course I would color it for you for free. And then you could (if you're happy with my work) advertise me as a colourer for other people's drawings. I am said to be a good colourist, so there may be people who would be interested in putting their drawings in my hands. From a drawing made by someone who is not an artist or by a child, I can make a real painting that can be a success. Even more so, a good drawing done by someone gifted, once painted by me, could be a beautiful success and singularly different than the one painted by its author. It would be a pain in the ass to paint drawings made by others but I like it and that's probably why I succeed in this. I would have liked to acquire paintings by bad artists and then paint over them following their drawing, it could have produced something curious, but I'm not rich enough to buy them because you can't buy them with paintings by me. I would also have liked to buy good paintings to have a collection, but good paintings can't be bought with my paintings either. You, who are not an idiot, would immediately judge what I am doing.
