BRETON, André (1896-1966), écrivain et poète français.
L.A.S., to a "dear friend." Antibes, March 13, 1948. 1 p. in-4. Small angular tear restored, without damage to the text. Slightly browned. Nice intimate letter. "I have been for some weeks now in the south of France, where the very physical necessity to put a distance between the torments of Paris and me, which they ended up greatly darkening, has led me. It was necessary to see trees again, or summits, or the sea, at last something that would heal what life has of feverish and adulterated today. I'm just getting over it. It's probably bad enough to say this to you, who have just been really very ill, but I must try to explain why I left your letters unanswered. It has sometimes become a drama for me to know how to preserve the minimum of personal and private life from which everything is reconstituted and recoloured at dawn. Here, at least I will have seen the sun rise every morning and reproduce, between seven and a quarter past seven, the prodigious transformations of which alchemy speaks to us. I have tried to imbibe them, in all vacancy of mind, as one is entitled to do here, at coffee time. All that you write to me moves me greatly and it is also in this light of the rising sun that your beautiful drawing crystallized for me, which is, pinned to the wall of the room, what I begin by seeing when I wake up. Of course, my dear friend, I wish with all my heart that you can establish a regular collaboration with our young friends from Neon. However, I have sworn to myself that I will not influence them, especially at the beginning, but I am sure that you will be able to join them. Be sure that I will not forget you in any group exhibition that may take place [...]".
