BEAUMARCHAIS, Pierre-Augustin Caron de (1732-1799), écrivain, homme d'affaires français.
Autograph draft of a letter addressed to the Comptroller General of Finance Claude-Guillaume Lambert (1726-1794). March 22, 1790. 1 p. in-4. Ratures and corrections. Miter marks, old restorations and small tears. About the Kehl Typographical Society. "[...] Neither neglect nor ingratitude has delayed the tribute of my gratitude by a few days; but I have desired that your benevolence should have its full effect to add to my just thanks. My characters are at home well intact, and my anxiety has ceased. A thousand thanks be to you. Never, Sir, has any Minister of Justice ever been the living proof, Sir, of your constant love for justice, and no man has ever had a greater respect for you [...]". In 1780, Beaumarchais had founded a printing shop in Kehl. He produced the monumental edition of Voltaire's Complete Works (1785-1790), the editions of Rousseau's Works, Alfieri's Virtù sconosciuta and his Marriage of Figaro. In spite of his considerable investments (forty presses, fonts and type moulds), Beaumarchais began the liquidation of the company, which was completed in 1791.
