GAO BROTHERS
Sense of space, 2003 C-Print print numbered 2/5, dated 2003 and signed in the lower right corner of the margin 150 x 86 cm THE GAO BROTHERS (1956 and 1962) GAO BROTHERS, Zhen and Qiang, are two brothers, born respectively in 1956 and 1962 in Jinan in Shandong Province. The elder brother studied Fine Arts at the Gongyi Academy of Arts in Shandong, while the younger brother graduated in literature from Qufu University. They have been working together since 1985 under the name Gao Brothers and have been involved from the very beginning in installations, performances, photographs and books (such as "One day in Beijing", "The State of China's Avant-Garde" and "The report of the Art Environment", which analyze contemporary Chinese cultural life and society. They live in the centre of Beijing, with their studio in the Beijing New Art Projects Gallery in Factory 798, and are also very active as curators in China and promoters of young artists. But the field in which they undeniably excel is photography. They participate in solo and group exhibitions in China and since 2001 they have started to exhibit their work abroad. The year 2005 marks the international recognition of their work through important exhibitions in prestigious cultural institutions: Institute for New Media in Frankfurt, Macedonian Museum of Thessaloniki, Foam Photography Museum in Amsterdam, ARENA in Santa Monica, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Seattle Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art in Chicago, International Center of Photography in New York... Through photographed performances and sometimes through computer manipulations, they create photographs that emphasize the collective and individual effects of their country's mutations. Among their most famous series "Sense of space" and "The Utopia of Hugging for 20 minutes" project an extraordinary intensity on human relationships and the relationship between the individual and the space around him.
