AUBUSSON
Three polychrome woollen tapestries depicting scenes of fishermen on a marine background, all in frames of baskets of flowers supported by garlands, framed by columns decorated with twists of flowers. In the taste of Vernet. Louis XVI period H. 224 cm. L. 210 cm. H. 224 cm. L. 187 cm. H. 240 cm. L. 124 cm. (Without border, two cuts, used and lined restorations). Throughout the 18th century a large number of tapestries were made in Aubusson on cartoons inspired by the engravings of C.J. Vernet. A letter of order from a merchant in Lyon addressed to the manufacturer Goubert Aîné, dated December 10, 1791, shows how, from a few selected engravings, the painters of the manufactory could freely compose their subject, in agreement with the client. One can thus find on these tapestries many details and characters borrowed from different paintings by Vernet.
