ALPHONS MUCHA (1860-1939)
The Hours of the Day (Morning Awakening-Daylight-Brightening-Evening day-Dreaming-night Rest) Rare series of the 4 lithographed color plates Signed "Mucha" in the decor and signed "Mucha" off the plate at the bottom right Not canvas, printed by Champenois, created in 1899 Plate : 62,5 x 83 cm Each lithograph: 59 x 18 cm Excellent state of conservation the original gilding is without alterations, no trace of oxidation, large margins Bibliography: J. Rennert and A. Weill, Mucha, Toutes les Affiches & Panneaux, - Editions Henri Veyrier, Paris, 1984, variant referenced under n° 62 variant 1 Rare impression of the four panels on a single sheet. The four titles now appear on a decorated cartouche that was added under each image. Only known copy bearing this signature in the lower right-hand corner outside the lithographs "Four young women with bare feet symbolize the different moments of the day. The ornamental frames are the same on each panel, but the amber hue of the strokes varies slightly from one to the other and the cross decoration shows different floral motifs in each image. Each figure stands out against a landscape with long stems of trees or flowers that underline her slimness. The part of the day represented appears as a title under the margin at the bottom of the picture. Each picture seems to have its own frame, as it is so elaborate; one may also wonder, from their shape, if the initial idea was not a series of four stained glass windows in Gothic style....". J. Rennert and A. Weill
