Large wooden gigaku mask with traces of polychromy, representing Karura, the bird man, a Buddhist guardian derived from an Indian deity in the shape of a rooster, holding a pearl in his beak. (Wears, small lacks, cracks). H. 30 cm. Metal base. Provenance: Sale Ader Picard Tajan, May 31, 1983, lot 357 and reproduced in the catalogue. Reference: A similar mask from the Nara era preserved at the Musée Guimet, Paris, n°EO 643.
