Whether one thinks of the important role played by Dufy or Lurçat, one is entitled to classify Lucien Coutaud and perhaps even to reserve a very special place for him, for he is undoubtedly almost the only one among his contemporaries to have taken such a natural and spontaneous interest in fields far removed from easel painting. For him it is a need, a real imperative vocation. He spends his time with a good, alert and lively grace, without the slightest prejudice, happy on the contrary to measure himself against the difficulties, each time renewed, that the execution of an order for a theatre set, tapestry or carpet offers him. In his mind there is no sharing possible: he aims only to satisfy his desire for expression while obeying the requirements of the material he uses or the problem of formal adaptation that is posed to him. Possessing his own spirit of fantasy and lively imagination, he uses it freely and offers us a very personal universe, built with extreme skill, where the painter and the decorator blend together. Each work is justified by its expressive power and responds rigorously, whatever the motif, to an equal concern for plasticity and harmony. Both artist and craftsman, he gives it a value of pure creation and applies himself to finding the most appropriate solution without giving credit to the game of chance or the whims of the performer.
