Alfred BOUCHER (1850-1934)
To the goal Rare and important bronze sculpture with brown shaded medal patina. Signed "A.Boucher" and stamp of the founder Siot Paris and numbered 988L. Old edition cast iron, circa 1930. H: 68 cm W: 100 cm D: 53 cm Bibliography: Bryan Catley, "Art Deco and other Figures", Edition Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, 2003, similar model reproduced on page 42. Alfred Boucher, a sculptor qualified as an academic artist inspired by mythological or biblical themes will have a very contemporary approach with the work "Au but". Boucher creates a group of three runners in full effort. The rendering of the bodies is "academic", reflecting the attachment to work well done and harmony, but the artist will show his passion for live models using the game of balance. Indeed one finds there the strength and power of the effort to reach the goal and the concern for expression, all realized in a perfectly harmonious setting. The short cut hair adds a very contemporary look to the sculpture. This group of three naked athletes in view of the finish line of a race is an effective part of the sports movement that led to the organization of the first Olympic Games of the modern era. Boucher was rewarded for this work at the 1886 Salon and at the 1889 Universal Exhibition.
