SIMEON CHARLES JOSEPH FOUCAULT (1884-1923)
Decorative silver bronze plate with relief decoration of a naked woman and flowers. Signed "S Foucault" circa 1925-1930. Diam: 36 cm Bibliography: Florence Camard, "Ruhlmann", Editions Monelle Hayot, Paris, 2009, cabinet with the plate reproduced on page 244. After studying at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris in 1904, Siméon Foucault was a pupil of Louis-Ernest Barrias and Jules Coutan. In 1912, he was awarded the first Grand Prix de Rome in sculpture and stayed as a boarder at the Villa Medici between 1913 and 1914. Like Pierre Turin, Alfred Jeanniot and the Martel brothers, Foucault created bronze plaques for Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann in the 1920s and 1925 for the series of ceremonial furniture known as "à fards". This octagonal lock plate that we are offering you was created for the "à fard" piece of furniture, an astonishing prototype of 1924, created by Ruhlmann with a red lacquer by Jean Dunand.
