MARIN-MARIE (1901-1987)
Cargo La Hague Gouache watercolour signed lower left 58 x 99 cm MARIN-MARIE, pseudonym of Marin Marie Paul Emmanuel Durand Couppel de Saint-Front, born on 10 December 1901 in Fougerolles-du-Plessis (Mayenne) and died on 11 June 1987 in Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët (Manche), is a French writer, marine painter and sailor. He was the official naval painter from December 1935. Marin-Marie was introduced to the sea from a very young age. As a sailor during his military service in the 1920s, he discovered the Arctic ice pack and blackened sketchbooks thanks to the mastery he acquired during evening classes at the Paris School of Fine Arts. It wasn't until his 70th birthday that this intrepid man stopped going to sea. Writer, painter, inventor, consultant for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, he regularly participates in the Salon de la Marine and practices oil, gouache, drawing and watercolour. He has illustrated books and produced posters. The ship La Hague is a Channel freighter. After the Second World War, France concentrated its energies on rebuilding the country, with American aid from the Marshall Plan. US-made cargo ships, the Liberty Ships, are delivered to the French government, which is seeking to rebuild its commercial fleet in order to revive its economy. The government orders ten cargo ships in 1946. Four of them are entrusted to the Compagnie générale d'armement maritime, a subsidiary of the Compagnie générale transatlantique : La Hague, La Hève, La Coubre and La Baule. The La Hague is built in Belfast (United Kingdom) and launched on 12 September 1946. She comes under the direct control of the Compagnie générale transatlantique on 18 July 1952. She is then assigned to the French West Indies. In the meantime, she is requisitioned to take part in the military operation in Suez (Egypt) in August 1956. In December 1970, she is put on the Mexican line. She is sold on 11 August 1971 t
