Pair of terrestrial and celestial globes Equatorial table engraved with the signs of the zodiac and resting on 3 mahogany moulded legs held by a compass at the spacer. Meridian circles and graduated brass time clocks. The globe is inscribed in a cartouche: - Cruchley's, new terrestrial globe from the most recent and best authorities. Exhibiting the discoveries in equatorial Africa, north pole. And the new settlements and divisions of Australia, New Zealand, California, Texas, &c. London. Both spheres are in a perfect state of freshness and perfectly legible. They have been gently restored and cleaned so as not to alter their natural patina. Georges Frederick CRUCHLEY (active from 1822 to 1875) works with Cary in 1850 and joins his name at 81 Fleet Street in London. This address is covered on the globe, as is often the case with the dealer's business name. George Frederick CRUCHLEY (23 April 1797 - 16 June 1880) was a London-based book and map dealer, active in the mid-19th century. Cruchley began his cartographic career as an apprentice in the venerable firm of Aaroon Arrowsmith. Many of Cruchley's early maps bear the words "From Arrowsmith's" on the imprint.
