Ivory model of an armed frigate, presented under sail by dow - Lot 84
Ivory model of an armed frigate, presented under sail by downwind. Very detailed deck, animated with characters. Trawling rowboat. Work from Dieppe, 19th century. L. model 16 cm. H. 13 cm. Globe 29 x 16 cm. In the 17th century, an ivory trade developed in Dieppe. France settled in Africa in 1628, thanks to its ships endowed with royal privileges, and opened a first trading post in Senegal. Eight years later, Richelieu accelerated the movement and created the Compagnie Normande, an association of merchants from Dieppe and Rouen. The aim was to exploit Senegal and the Gambia. The town of Dieppe once again became prosperous thanks to the work of the ivory, the quality of which became famous throughout France and even beyond. Impressive quantities of tusks are unloaded, in particular by the ships of Jehan Ango, a shipowner who makes Dieppe one of the richest cities in France. The production is unequalled in its variety and refinement: sundials, statuettes, tobacco graters, portraits in medallions and above all model ships. Two families dominate the production: the Cruppevolle and the Belleteste. The latter worked from the 18th to the 19th century.
