Ptolemaic armillary sphere made of cardboard... - Lot 57 - Tessier & Sarrou et Associés
Ptolemaic armillary sphere made of cardboard and engraved papers resting on a blackened wooden base. The central sphere is inscribed: "A Paris chez le sieur FORTIN, rue de la Harpe. 1773". The meridian circle is inscribed: "A Paris chez DELAMARCHE, géographe, rue du foin Saint-Jacques au collège de Maître Gervais". A banner under the equatorial table reads: "cercle horizon crépusculaire" (twilight horizon circle). France, second part of the 18th century. H. 53 cm. Diam. 30 cm. Rare copy of a sphere showing the association of the two great globe makers of the late 18th century. Jean-Baptiste FORTIN, born in 1740 and died in Bagneux, France, on October 16, 1817, is a French geographer, cartographer, and manufacturer of scientific instruments. In 1778, Jean-Baptiste Fortin bought the map collection of the geographer Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723-1786), who was in great financial difficulty, and exploited it until 1786, when he sold it to Charles François Delamarche (1740-1817). He had his workshops at the corner of rue du Fouin and rue de la Harpe in Paris.
