TOURVILLE (Anne-Hilarion de Cotentin, comte de)
General Signals of Monsieur le Comte de Tourville, vice-admiral of France, flying the flag of an admiral, & general of the royal naval army [sic]. No place, [between 1689 and 1693]. Small folio of 79 pp.; half calf with corners, spine with gold threaded bands (imitation binding). Rare document, printed in small numbers, listing the various signals used by the squadron commanded by the Count de Tourville (number of cannon shots, colours and shapes of the pavilions as well as their location on the mast). Good copy. Small wetness and ink stain in the upper corner of the pages, rare stitching. Unknown by Polak. Anne-Hilarion de Costentin de TOURVILLE was appointed vice-admiral of the Levant fleet in 1689, after Duquesne's death, and was de facto commander of the Royal Navy, since the vice-admiral of Le Ponant, the marshal of Estrée, was no longer at sea. He took part in the battles of the Augsburg League War, and was appointed marshal in 1693.
