A naval officer, the author spent 3 years, from 1852 to 1855, in Polynesia and mainly in Papeete. On his return, he published a map of the Tuamotu archipelago, then he accompanied Admiral Page, as aide-de-camp, during the Cochinchine campaign, from 1859 to 1861. Afterwards, he served in Gabon before returning to Cochinchine.
