Vice-Admiral Lalande [title on the back cover]. No place, [1844]. Autograph manuscript, with erasures and corrections. Small folio (32.3 x 21 cm) of (6) ff.; pink semi-percalin, marbled paper covers, gilt title on spine (binding late 19th or early 20th century, signed Franz). Autograph minute, in Chassériau's hand, of the speech given by Baron de Mackau, Minister of the Navy and the Colonies, at the funeral of Vice-Admiral Lalande, who died on May 19, 1844. It traces the main stages of the sailor's career. Qq. lightly freckled. Frédéric Victor Charles CHASSERIAU (1807-1881) was at the time chief of staff to the Minister of the Navy and the Colonies. A proponent of the emancipation of slaves, he wrote a Précis de l'abolition de l'esclavage dans les colonies anglaises (1840-1841), as well as several works on the history and organization of the Navy. He is also the author of numerous biographical articles on famous sailors. His work earned him the title of naval historiographer.
