Treaty of navigation and trade between France... - Lot 5 - Tessier & Sarrou et Associés
Treaty of navigation and trade between France and Great Britain Concluded at Versailles on 26 September 1786. Paris, Imprimerie Royale, 1786. In-4 of 45 pp.; marbled paperboard, red title piece (modern binding). Text of the Treaty of Eden-Rayneval, named after the English and French signatories. Conceived at the end of the United States War of Independence to put an end to the economic conflict between the two powers, this treaty established a system of progressive reduction of customs duties. However, it soon proved to be too favourable to England, whose industrial advance over France was notorious, thus upsetting the French economic equilibrium. The French market was flooded with cheaper and better quality English products, causing prices to fall and thousands of workers and craftsmen to be put out of work. As a result, this treaty will be one of the causes of the revolution of 1789. Good copy.
