" Honoré de Balzac, Illusions perdues, 1837-1843. At the turn of the century, the hat appeared to be the indispensable accessory of any elegant woman. It echoed the toilets, where it tried to respond to their exuberance. Under the Empire, it is very often advanced and covers the face. Thereafter, it blooms in a very wide pass, allowing sometimes, until abuse, trimmings of lace, ribbons or flowers. An indispensable accessory, it remains so during masked balls and carnivals where women like to dress up, as our white felt copy shows. But it leaves room for jewels or hair ornaments for traditional balls. Lot 133 is a rare preserved example
