Exceptional court dress with train probably belonging to the - Lot 111
Exceptional court dress with train probably belonging to the Duchess of Berry, Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Siciles (1798-1870). Dress in pink and gold changing taffeta with motifs of carnations and embroidered leaves, in silk of three shades of pale pink at the needlepoint, edged with gold threads. The carnation is the flower of God and the symbol of love. The decoration is completed with ears of wheat, symbols of wealth and prosperity. The grains are re-embroidered in silver amaties and the beards in silver yarn. The costume includes a bodice with a large whaleboned boat neckline and closed at the back by a series of eyelets, with small balloon sleeves. The skirt with a large gathered and wavy flounce is finished with a large croquet edged with silk thread embroidery and shaded with gold thread. The bottom of the dress is embellished with a wide wadded braid with oblique stripes. A train, held at the waist by a belt with a matching spike, completes the ensemble. Circa 1828. Beautiful state of freshness (silk gaps under the balloons, rare small holes, stains, a few drops of metallic embroidery and small parts of the lining of the train to be reattached). Provenance: Descent of Madame d'Hespel, friend of the prince of B., close to Louis XVIII. According to the family tradition, would have belonged to the duchess of Berry, Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Siciles (1798-1870). The quality of the fabric, the embroidery and the whole corroborate this attribution.
