STENDHAL (Henri Beyle dit)
Le Rouge et le Noir A. Levasseur, Paris 1831, two volumes in-8, false title, title decorated with a vignette of Henry Monnier engraved by Porret, 1f. Publisher's warning and 398 pages; false title, title with a different vignette, 486 pages, 1f. Author's note, complete. Bound in contemporary black half-basane binding, smooth spine with gilt filets. First edition with on the false title page this coded autograph consignment from Stendhal: "Hommage de l'auteu [ r ] P.241. A.29.". This ex-dono of the author remains enigmatic, as well in its meaning as in the identity of its addressee, most probably a woman. It seems to indicate P.241 for page 241 and A.29 for the year 1829. Slight stings. Nice copy. In April 1829, Stendhal is in love with Alberthe de Rubempré (nicknamed Mrs. Azur because she lived on Rue Bleue), and as she continued to have intimate relations with her cousin (and lover) Delacroix, he courts Mrs. Virginie Ancelot to arouse the jealousy of the beautiful and frivolous Alberthe, we know that he had sent a copy of his novel to both of them although we cannot attribute this provenance with certainty. According to the Victor del Litto and Pierre Berès file, which lists the copies of the novel, there is only one copy with a nominative consignment, that of Baroness Charles de Rothschild, only four other copies (now five with ours) bear the mention "Hommage de l'auteur", and of these two have an intimate provenance, that of Felix Faure and Mareste, we must now also count with this one, the most mysterious of all.
