Soltykoff, Prince Alexis
Trips to India. Paris, Garnier Frères (undated). 2 volumes in one large volume in-8. Rare second edition of this journey of Prince Soltykoff. Bound in a contemporary gilt percaine binding. First plate decorated with a large figure (Maharadja) in ceremonial dress inserted in a gilt cartouche, the whole set in frames with rich geometrical and floral gilt decorations on polychrome backgrounds. The second dish is decorated with a musician playing a sitar under a dome. The back is damasked with gold. This account of Prince Alexis Soltykoff's second voyage is the most successful and most sought-after. It will earn him the nickname "the Indian" on his return.
