GRANDVILLE Jean-Ignace-Isidore
Scenes from the private and public lives of animals. Study of contemporary mores. Edited by M. P. J Stahl. Paris, Hetzel and Paulin, 1842. 2 volumes grand in-8. Fine bookbinding in full sorrow decorated with special plates made after Grandville's drawings for the cover of volume II. The original drawing for the plaque on the front covers, showing in part a frog and a bird greeting each other, is reproduced by Sophie Malavieille in "Reliures et cartonnages d'éditeur en France au XIXe siècle, p. 125". The absence of decoration on the corners of the first is indicative of the binding for the first edition, which is confirmed by the caption on the frontispiece which includes the caption "Badigeonographie générale des murailles de la France et de l'étranger" (General Badigeonography of the Walls of France and Abroad), which was soon to fall victim to censorship. Smooth back decorated with animal motifs. Golden edges. Very beautiful book illustrated by Grandville, including 2 frontispices, 199 plates and many woodcut vignettes in the text. Nice copy
