DAUMIER (Honoré)
The Hundred and One Robert-Macaire. Paris: Aubert et Cie, 1840. 2 volumes petit in-4, 254 x 197 mm. Half red chagrin, plates decorated with a "à la corbeille" decoration of the Boutigny type, smooth spine decorated including the title, gilt edges. Rare edition offering 101 lithographs by Honoré Daumier, which are a reduction of the plates published in large in-4 format in 1836-1838. The caption of the penultimate illustration, "Robert-Macaire chez Daumier", perfectly defines what this series of caricatures represents: "It is the exact painting of the voleries of our time...". It is the faithful portrait of a host of rascals that can be found everywhere, in commerce, in politics, in finance, everywhere ! everywhere ! ». The edition consists of two volumes, each containing a false title, a volume title, a table and respectively 50 and 51 issues, each of them comprising 4 pages, the first 2 and the 4th being occupied by the text and the 3rd by the illustration. The "comic and explanatory" texts, according to the terms used by Aubert in his catalogue, are by Maurice Alhoy and Louis Huart. The ideas and legends of the figures are by Charles Philipon. ONE OF THE RARE COLOURED COPIES IN BOOKBINDING OF THE PERIOD. Carteret clearly states that these are the most sought-after copies: "the shades of colour are vivid and covered with shiny, eraser brushstrokes". He also states that the specimens are rare and in good condition. Carteret, III, 187-188. Copy in an exceptional state of freshness, whose lithographs have retained their remarkable colours.
