HUGO Victor - Lot 199
HUGO Victor Les Misérables. Paris Pagnerre libraire-éditeur Paris 1862. E.O. published simultaneously in Paris by Pagnerre and by Lacroix et Verboeckhoven in Brussels, all under the aegis of the official publisher A. Lacroix, Verboeckhoven & Cie, for political reasons and to circumvent censorship. Fictitious mention of the seventh edition, title page in red and black. The first two volumes bear the name of the printer Poupart Devyl, one of Hugo's official printers, with whom he was eventually in litigation. The others bear the name of the printer Claye, who is presented as the printer of the E.O. and who had kept elements facilitating rapid reprinting after the trial and the change of printer. Complete with 10 in-8 volumes in a fine period binding in half cherry morocco, 5-ribbed spine, gold lettering and date at foot, gilt head, very light scattered foxing, a small stain on the spine of the first volume, otherwise very good overall condition. Bound without covers, armorial bookplate of E.M. MANCEL.
