SECONDE GUERRE MONDIALE.
Captain G's handwritten notebook. Horn. 13 June - 29 November 1941. Notebook Petit-in 8 of 44 pp. Demi-toile, red cardboard.
Interesting diary of a captain, prisoner of war. Taken prisoner in the Ardennes on 13 June 1940, the author spent his first night in Vouziers: "Wave meat soup, lying in the sacristy (with a dozen officers) on the effects of altar boys. We drink our last French wine there. Fameux!". His battery was taken after a "general machine-gun fire, the village having been surrounded". On foot, they went to Signy-l'Abbaye, Aubigny, Givet, Beauraing, then "by iron" to Trier, Mainz, Koblenz, Berlin, to arrive on June 24th at Zippen, "a bare hilltop town full of prisoners. The 48 of us are staying in a wooden room measuring 10 m x 7 m, with 3 bunks of used straw on top of each other, but no straw mattresses, and no nails to hang our things". 25 June: "They say the armistice is signed". There follow entries noting Sunday masses, the ordinary ("I now know what it is like to beg for a piece"), the absence of mail and readings ("I attend the talk on bees by a military chaplain"; "bridge becomes my main hobby"), the retrieval of all objects, lice and "on-dit" and "bobards" ("it is said that nothing is rationed in France"; "Vernon would have been completely burnt down" etc.). On October 4, more than a thousand prisoners over 40 years of age embarked in 3rd class wagons for Schubin [Poland]: "the Germans are clearly friendly, doing more for us than they should". 30 October: "A preliminary peace signing is officially announced. What should we personally expect? Probably nothing. But our liberation will have to come one day. 11 November: "They say Pétain and Laval in Berlin for the signing of certain agreements. Is this our liberation?". Attached: a captioned plan of the camp; 2 original photographs sent by G.
