JULES VERNE. - Lot 357
JULES VERNE. The Meteor Hunt / The Danube Pilot. Illustrations by George Roux. Paris, Collection Hetzel, 1908. Grand in-8° double, polychrome cardboard "à un éléphant, titre dans l'éventail". Engel bookbinder. Gilt edges. Blue guards. Twelve coloured off-text plates. Printing Gauthier-Villars. Original illustrated editions and 1st double-cardboard. The very first cartonnage, before the modification following the lawsuit brought against the author and the publisher in 1910. A court decision had forced Jules Hetzel and Jules Verne to change Jackel Semo's name in the novel Le Pilote du Danube. Jules Verne did so and substituted the name of Yacoub Ogul, but it was decided to throw a clue on the first plate of the following cardboard boxes to differentiate the copies from those of the first edition: originally gilded, the two dashes placed on and under the words "Extraordinary journeys" became black. The volume presented here - gilded dashes - is indeed from the 1st edition and the 1st uncorrected cardboard box. Very nice copy.
