Ferdinand ROYBET (1840-1920)
Musketeer, circa 1880 Oil on mahogany Signed on the top left 81 x 65 cm Beautiful scroll frame in gilded stuccoed wood. Originally from the city of Uzès, Ferdinand Roybet studied painting at the Musée de Lyon where he refined his observations by studying nature directly. In 1864, he moved to Paris with the help of his friend Antoine Vollon, where he exhibited for the first time at the Salon. This lover of the great periods of the 17th and 18th centuries, painted musketeers regularly with a realistic treatise accentuated by a very particular meticulousness. Over the years, his painting has been enriched by contributions from his travels to Holland, North Africa, Italy and Spain, which have led him to study the compositions of the great masters. The Roybet Fould Museum exhibits many of the artist's works.
